Civics Projects
Designing a civics course tailored for seventh graders has been one of the most rewarding projects I have ever undertaken. Despite my background in working with adult learners, I delved into this endeavor with enthusiasm, recognizing the plethora of engaging activities and delivery methods that could captivate younger students. Through this experience, I discovered that these engaging strategies and content can also be effectively adapted for adult learners.
This course incorporated various elements such as videos, music, interactive components, and a central storyline that revolved around traveling back in time to the era of the Revolutionary War, before the birth of our nation.

The images in the right demonstrate the types of activities that were included in the course, starting with the journey back in time, including interactive ports along the way. Also included were visual cues such as the break-up or broken heart cue serving as a prompt, which helped to distinguish the difference between the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. There was also an activity for group discussion to discuss the events that were occurring and then deliberating if the students were ready to sign the declaration. Quizzes and assessments were included throughout, usually in the form of a game, like the Jeopardy style game shown on the right.
